Description

M35 is an open cluster located 2900 light years away in the constellation of Gemini at a declination of 24 degrees.  It is a magnitude 5 cluster which spans 38 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 32 light years.

This open star cluster consists of over 2000 stars. The bright blue stars are an indication that the cluster is relatively young. A few orange giants are also present.

In contrast, the much denser, 6x more distant star cluster to the lower right (NGC 2158) is dominated by older, orangish stars.
