Description

This object, one of my favorite globular clusters, is located 57,000 light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +18 degrees.  It is a magnitude 9 cluster which spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 170 light years.

NGC 5053 is only 1.5 degrees southeast of the M53 globular cluster, which is much more concentrated.

Few globular clusters are resolved as easily as this one.  It has a Shapley–Sawyer Concentration Rating of 11 (out of 12), indicating that it is very loose.  The cluster stand out well from the background and has a nice mix of orange and blue stars.  It is one of those clusters which looks like a globular/open hybrid.
