Description

This is a Milky Way mosaic, shot from the Almost Heaven Star Party in Spruce Knob, WV in August 2023.

Gear: Canon 6dm2 at ISO 1600, with a Sigma 40mm f/1.4 at f/1.4. Tracked with Fornax lightrack ii, CF tripod, no guiding.

Mosaic is 2x2 with a total of 4 frames, each frame is 30 seconds. Total image exposure time: 2 minutes. Land brightness was seperately adjusted and then blended with final image.

Processed to be close to natural color as possible: Adobe camera raw, PTGui to create mosaic, rnc-color-stretch for color preserving stretch, PS for final blending and curves tools and export to web, maintaining color space throughout.

Bottom of image shows yellow/green air glow above clouds and mountain ranges. Milky Way lanes dust generally yellow and orange/reddish/brown dust. Dark lanes are so dense they block star light from reaching our position here on Earth. Faint green/red airglow sprinkled throughout image.
