The Cygnus Loop has been called the prototypical middle-aged supernova remnant. By astronomical standards it is nearby and has little foreground dust in the way. The Cygnus Loop’s distance from earth is about 1,800 light years. The Loop, a strong source of radio waves and X-Rays, is still expanding at about 100 km (60 miles) per second.
