Description

An emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, the Crescent Nebula is formed by the fast stellar wind from HD 192163, a Wolf-Rayet star, colliding with and energizing the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant.  The collision forms a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward.  The inward moving shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray emitting temperatures.   Wolf-Rayet stars have lost their outer hydrogen and are fusing helium and heavier elements.  They are hotter than almost all other kinds of stars, and produce strong stellar winds.

This picture was shot from my Bortle 7 backyard in July of 2022, and was my most successful attempt to capture the outer shell of oxygen which appears blue in the photo.
