This close up view of LDN 1235 captures only a small portion of the mouth end of the shark. We get a little closer view of the dust and VdB 150, the bright blue reflection nebula in the upper right. The bright star pair in the center, one red and one blue, both solve as HD211300 suggesting to me this is a binary system.

The data were captured during the sharp summer months and the Luminance master measures 1.7" FWHM. Color masters ranged from 1.65" to 2.02".

With a dark nebula you need all the SNR you can get so I processed a SuperLuminance. This was done by loading the 4 channel masters in Image Integration, turning off rejection but leaving on weighting and normalization. It's a good idea to check affterwards but this almost always produces a higher SNR than the straight Luminance master at the cost of only a couple of minutes work. In this case, PSF Signal weight for the SuperLuminance was 1.94+03 and for the Luminance 1.70+03 - a nice little bump. My favorite sanity check on SNR is star count and the SuperLuminance caught 906 stars vs. 883 for the Luminance. If my RGB channels are significantly higher in FWHM I won't do a SuperLuminance but here there was no issue with sharpness.

At F7.2, the CDK14 is not optimal for capturing Dark Nebulae, but the best telescope to use is always the one you have...

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
