Description

IC 5146, also known as the Cocoon Nebula, from Borlte 1 skies at Kodachrome State Park in south-central Utah. is a beautiful and intriguing emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus.
  • Nebula Type: IC 5146 is classified as an emission/reflection nebula. It consists of a combination of ionized gas, which emits light, and dust particles that reflect light from nearby stars.
  • IC 5146 is a region of active star formation. Within the nebula, new stars are being born from the dense gas and dust clouds. These young stars often exhibit a blue color, indicating their youth and high surface temperatures.
  • Estimated to be located around 4,000 light-years away from Earth. Its relatively close proximity makes it a popular target for both amateur and professional astronomers.
  • Embedded within IC 5146 is a young star cluster known as Collinder 470. This cluster consists of recently formed stars that are still gravitationally bound to each other. The presence of the star cluster adds to the overall beauty and interest of the nebula.
  • The stars within IC 5146, including those in Collinder 470, provide the illumination for the nebula. Their intense ultraviolet radiation ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to emit the characteristic reddish glow seen in the nebula.
  • Dark Nebulae: IC 5146 is surrounded by dark nebulae, such as Barnard 168, which create contrasting patches of dark, opaque regions against the background of the bright nebula. These dark nebulae are composed of dense interstellar dust and gas, blocking the light from background stars.
