Description

My biggest project so far: Heart & Soul Nebulae! This is a 2 panel image taken with RedCat51 APO telescope and a mono camera with narrow band filters. Over 34 hours of total integration time required to get this result. I handpicked 514 frames from many others, each of them with 4 minutes exposure.

The Heart and Soul are two bright emission nebulae from Cassiopeia constellation. The Heart Nebula is visible in on the bottom right, has a shape reminiscent of a classical heart symbol. The Soul Nebula on the upper left. Both nebulae shine brightly in the red light of energized hydrogen. In this three-color light emitted from sulfur, shown in reddish, and oxygen, shown in blue. Several young open clusters of stars are visible near the nebula centers. Light takes about 6,000 years to reach us from these nebulae, which together span roughly 300 light years. Studies of stars and clusters like those found in the Heart and Soul Nebulae have focused on how massive stars form and how they affect their environment.
