Last year I had a night shift in the beautiful Semmering area and at 2 o'clock in the morning I looked at the Sonnwendstein, where Orion happened to be standing above it. It was immediately clear: this photo had to be taken!

So I looked for a suitable spot a bit away from Semmering station. And as the weather is like this there, there are always a few clouds of fog coming over the pass from the Mürztal valley, so unfortunately the stars have a large halo, but you just adapt to nature.
After five days in the blue hour, I finally got the foreground in the picture without fog, the background was taken separately on the Steyersberger Schwaig and aligned with the reference picture from my night shift.
On the Sonnwendstein is the transmitter mast for the radio in the Semmering region. The Sonnwendstein itself is 1523m high, the transmitter mast 100m.

Voriges jahr hatte ich eine Nachtschicht im schönen Semmeringgebiet und um 2 Uhr früh sah ich auf den Sonnwendstein, wo zufällig der Orion darüber stand. Sofort war klar: das Foto will gemacht werden!

Daraufhin suchte ich mir einen geeigneten Standplatz etwas abseits vom Bahnhof Semmering. Und wie das Wetter dort so ist, kommen immer einige Nebelschwaden über den Pass aus dem Mürztal, daher haben die Sterne leider einen grossen Halo, aber man passt sich halt der Natur an.
Nach fünf Tagen in der Blauen Stunde bekam ich den Vordergrund endlich ohne Nebel aufs Bild, der Hintergrund wurde separat auf der Steyersberger Schwaig aufgenommen und nach dem Referenzbild aus meinem Nachtdienst ausgerichtet.
Am Sonnwendstein steht der Sendemast für den Rundfunk im Semmeringgebiet, Der Sonnwendstein selbst ist 1523m hoch, der Sendemast 100m.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
