NGC 2467, the bright nebula in the upper right of this image, lies toward the southern constellation of Puppis, with many of its stars being about 17,000 light years distant. ... Observations of many of the stars in NGC 2467 show them to be more a superposition of loose groups of stars at different distances than a coherent open cluster of stars energizing the nebula. ... [This image ] captures various stages of star formation. The stars at the far left of NGC 2467 have already formed and their birth nebulae have already dispersed. At the lower left of NGC 2467, [just left of center of this image], lies a very young star that is breaking free of its surrounding birth cocoon of gas. On the right edge of the nebula, a bright wall of bright gas glows as it evaporates from the energy of many newly formed bright stars. Toward the center, deep dark lanes of dust hide parts of the nebula that surely are forming new stars. [from Starship Asterisk].

This is a 24.5h RGBHO image of NGC 2467 using data collected by DeepSkyWest in Rio Hurtato, Chile, in January and February 2021 using their TOA150 telescope.

I think this is not a great nickname for this beautiful object. My wife suggests it should be called the Butterfly (or Papillion, to be different).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
