Description

Sh2-188 is a somewhat unusual planetary nebula, owing its irregular form to the fact that its core star is travelling fast through the surrounding interstellar medium, thus creating a bow wave effect which can be observed here. It is rather rich in SII emissions which is why I opted for the full Hubble SHO palette here instead of the much more common HOO palette which many photographers seem to prefer here. There is however not a lot of structural difference between the SII and Ha signals.
