Description

As a contributing member of the New Horizon project, our primary objective is to capture images in visual light of supernova remnants, previously discerned solely through radio wavelengths.  I was tasked to take a deep exposure of SNR G055.7+03.4.

After just 5 hrs of exposure time in H-alpha I noticed an interesting structure on the bottom right next to the SNR.

Upon further inspection I located a white dwarf close to the center of the structure. This let us to believe we are dealing with a previously unknown planetary nebula.
Our candidate got officially registered as NHZ-1 on https://planetarynebulae.net/FR/page_np.php?id=1171

This happened in Summer 2023, a few days after I had to say goodbye to my best friend of the past 14 years, my Australian Shepherd "Vita".
After collecting some more hours on the target and combining the data to have a look at the first color HOO image, I couldn't believe what I saw.
The shape of the nebula strongly resembles her eye!

Together with the New Horizon team, we decided on naming this PN "Vita's Nebula"
Thank you for this wonderful memory.
