Description

Gyulbudaghian's nebula GM 1-29 was discovered by astronomer Armen Gyuldubaghian while systematically inspecting the POSS plates searching for Herbig-Haro objects as part of his doctoral thesis. Many of his finds were subsequently examined in more detail at the largest telescope in the world at the time, the Soviet 6m telescope in the Caucasus, and were included in the GM catalog. It quickly became clear that Gyulbudaghian's nebula is a bipolar reflection nebula with high variability and is illuminated by the variable star PV Cep.

Within months the shape changes and since its discovery many variations between a full fan and “almost completely invisible” occurred. These fast variations had been the motivation for my visit – when weather permits I would like to document the variability (which is probably subject to similar mechanisms as Hubble's variable nebula) over the next years.

Embedded in the faint clouds of LBN 468 the entire region offers plenty of photogenic dust, which I also tried to capture, but was only partially possible due to the relatively small FOV.
