Description

Messier 20, the enigmatic Trifid Nebula, presents one of the most beautiful and unique formations in the Summer sky. Depicted here in the light of hydrogen-alpha, it is both a reflection and emission nebula, with an embedded stellar jet indicative of star formation deep in part of the gas cloud. The Trifid resides some 4,200 light years away, just north of the Archer, and spans almost a half-degree on the night sky.
