Description

After hiking up out of Deadman Canyon in Kings Canyon National Park, during a recent 6-day backpacking trip in the High Sierra, my group of five intrepid hikers stopped to admire the majesty of the mountains all around us and the valley below (and to catch our breath).  Looking up, as I was about to cross-over to Sequoia National Park via Elizabeth Pass (11,375'), we were greeted with and stunned by the beauty of a sun halo, specifically a 22 degree rainbow halo, hanging over the mountains of the Great Western Divide.

Thankfully Elliot H., whose instagram account is @lajollaphotos, brought his iPhone 13 Pro Max and captured the moment so that every one of us can enjoy and share in the wonders and beauty of our natural world.  Thanks again to Elliot, who was kind enough to allow me to process his image in PixInsight and for giving me permission to post this photo on Astrobin.  For image processing I focused on lightening the foreground cliffs, sharpening the clouds and stones, and accentuating the rainbow nature of the halo.

I trust this picture leaves you with a greater appreciation of the awe inspiring natural beauty that is found within California's national parks.

My sincerest gratitude to my fellow backpackers for all their help and encouragements during the challenging aspects of the hike:  Mark B., Shea B., Matt E., Elliot H., and Eylon S.
