Description

This is an up-close image of the open star cluster NGC 2244, and some of its surrounding nebulosity.  NGC 2244, also know as the Satellite Cluster, is located in the center of the Rosette Nebula.

The Rosette Nebula is an HII region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The open cluster NGC 2244 is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula's matter in the last five million years. The nebula spans 130 light years, has an angular size of 1.3 degrees and is located about 5,200 light years away.
