Description

This massive cloud of ionized hydrogen is the crown of Cygnus (the celestial Swan in Greek), right next to the star Deneb - its tail. While we see two distinct forms, the North America (NGC7000) Nebula being the bigger one and resembling the continent's geography and the Pelican (IC5070) being the smaller one on top, they are actually parts of one major system, called Sh2-117. A massive dark band of interstellar dust (called L935) separates it in two, as we see it from Earth. The "Cygnus Wall", on the pacific coast of Mexico (low right on the image), is a famous feature.
