Description

I imaged this a couple years ago, and did not put enough time into it. It's very low in the southern sky, so each night there's not much time on target. It barely clears the neighbours willow tree. I had planned on getting more data, but there's a few cloudy days coming, so I decided to release what I have. The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula of a dying star, 650 light years away. You can see a white dwarf in the center, which illuminates the nebula with UV light. While similar to M57, the Ring Nebula, it 1/3rd the distance and over twice the diameter, so it fills the frame of a large scope.
