Description

M27 was the first planetary nebula discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. The central star is a white dwarf and this explosion is similar to the one our Sun will produce at the end of his life. It is situated in Vulpecula at 1360 l.y. (Wikipedia).

This nebula has a high dynamic range which makes it difficult to process. There are a few risks when processing it, compressing the core will give it a flat appearence with no 3D structure and overstretching the data for the faint halo can increase the noise too much. I tried to keep the globular shape while revealing the central structures. Lots of trials with the palette (I am really no good at HOO, can't wait for the SHO nebulae) and I finally opted for a non-linear mix, I generally mix everything in linear. Somehow the SNR looked better. The stars are in natural RGB color. Shot on multiple nights from April 13 - May 12.
