Description

M20 - Trifid Nebula / M21

There is a lot going on in this image.

M20 combines a red emission nebula with a blue reflection nebula, dust lanes, which separate the emission nebula into three lobes, hence the name "Trifid" and a star cluster within the nebula itself.

The upper right corner of the image contains M21, a "young" star cluster not associated with M20 that contains many dim stars as well as a few blue giants.

To the left of M20 is a faint red region corresponding to an emission nebula - Sh2-28

The detail present in the core of Trifid never ceases to capture my attention, so its tempting to show just M20 in the frame, but the larger field of view allows several less prominent, but complementary objects to serve as a backdrop.

This is actually the first image I (Michael) have posted here, the rest being the effort of my son, Jonathan. Lots more to follow, as I become more proficient at image processing.
