Melotte 15

Melotte 15 is a young cluster (1.5m years) of ‘O’ type supergiants which are responsible for irradiating the dust pillars and emissions at the heart of IC 1805. Between 20-100 x solar mass, these hot bright stars tend to burn out fairly quickly within 3-6m years. IC1805 the heart nebula lies around 7,500 LY from earth.

This is a totally reprocessed image using Ha data collected on 21 September, and OIII data l collected on 28 Sept. Sky conditions were not very stable and the moon interfered with data collection, after I wasted an hour trying to manually find IC1805 and set up the frame.

Despite this I managed just over 5 hours total integration, which I aligned, calibrated and stacked in ASTAP using a 90% quality filter. The resulting stacks were composed in Startools as HOO with addition of Ha data as L channel. The OIII channel is not particularly strong but I think adds to this image; I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

Description: A revised version to try and bring out the OIII data a bit more. As this is fairly poor quality data, the image is a bit more noisy. I tried blending with Ha data to preserve the detail. It doesn't stand up to too much scrutiny!

Description: An HOO bi-colour version with 275m OIII stretched, smoothed and stars removed, overlayed with 185m Ha processed to retain detail and white stars. Resolution is very poor, due to poor quality data (gathered between weather fronts with poor seeing)
