Description

NGC1491 is a bright emission nebula and HII region.
It is located about 10,700 light-years away in the Perseus spiral arm of our Galaxy in the constellation Perseus.
It is an HII (Ionized Hydrogen) region where new stars are being born. These regions are created when ultraviolet radiation from hot stars ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to emit visible light.
The surrounding dust is also heated by this radiation, so we also see it glow in infrared light.
The bright 11.22 magnitude star at the centre is illuminating the nebula.
