Description

These 2 faint planetary nebulae are located in the constellation of Scutum at a declination of -6 degrees.

Abell 49, at the center of the image, is a magnitude 16 PN which spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  I could not find a distance for this object.  Assuming that this object has the typical PN diameter of 2 light years, it would be located about 7000 light years away from us.  HII dominates the nebula rim while OIII dominates the nebula central region.  Some breakout seems to appear at the 11 o’clock and 5 0’clock positions.  I do not see a progenitor star.

Py 1-4 is the beautiful tiny teal-colored object located towards the left side of the image.  Even though this is a much smaller PN than Abell 49, it is a brighter magnitude (14) because the light is more concentrated.  This PN is located 33,000 light years away, which is very distant for a PN.  It is 1.3 light years in diameter.
