Description

A first capture of M31. 1.7 hours over two evenings.

M31 (or Messier 31) or the Andromeda Galaxy is a magnitude 3.28 spiral galaxy in the constellation of Andromeda. Approximately 2.5 million light years distant. It is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own galaxy - the Milky Way. It is visible as a very faint smudge on moonless nights. But alas - my eyes are getting too old to see it naked eye anymore! It is one of the most distant objects visible to the naked eye. Some of the kids I do programs for can see it. Easy with binoculars. As somewhat of a mirror image of our own Milky Way, this monstrous aggregation of stars, dust and gas allows us to see the features of our galaxy that we cannot observe because we are inside it!

The two large glowing objects outside the main galaxy are companion galaxies of Andromeda - M32 and M110.
