Eta Carinae Nebula (NGC 3372)

Eta Carina é o sistema estelar mais massivo da nossa galáxia, pelo menos dentro de um raio de 10 mil anos luz. Os estudos sugerem que na verdade o sistema se constitui de duas estrelas massivas, uma com 90 vezes a massa do Sol e outra com pelo menos 30 massas solares. As duas estrelas estão nas fases finais de suas vidas e seu comportamento mostra que falta pouco para que elas explodam em um evento muito mais intenso do que uma supernova, ou duas no caso.

O tamanho e luminosidade da estrela é tão grande, mas tão grande que, se estivesse no lugar de Sirius (que é a maior estrela visível do céu), brilharia como uma lua cheia!

O diâmetro físico dela tem quase o mesmo diâmetro da órbita da Terra em torno do Sol (fonte: Sandro Coletti). Deu pra entender?

O que mais me impressiona são as nuvens de poeira e gás iluminadas pela estrela (ou estrelas).

A nebulosa em si é rica em nebulosas escuras, pequenos aglomerados estelares e muita poeira estelar.

E tem um detalhe: é um privilégio só pra quem mora no hemisfério sul.

Eta Carinae is the most massive star system in our galaxy, at least within a radius of 10,000 light years. Studies suggest that the system actually consists of two massive stars, one with 90 times the mass of the Sun and the other with at least 30 solar masses. The two stars are in the final stages of their lives and their behavior shows that there is little left for them to explode in an event much more intense than a supernova, or two in this case.

The size and luminosity of the star is so big that, if it were in the place of Sirius (which is the biggest star visible in the sky), it would shine like a full moon!

The nebula itself is rich in dark nebulae, small star clusters and lots of stardust.

And there's a detail: it's a privilege only for those who lives in the southern hemisphere!
