This image shows the region centered about Sh2-86 (also known as LBN 135) and the associated open cluster NGC 6823. This open cluster is about 7,313 light years distant (by parallax). Just to the southeast (lower left) is a small but colorful planetary nebula (Kronberger 9). To the southwest is NGC 6820 (galactic nebula) which in the past has been identified with the larger emission structure to the southwest, but more recently designated (by the NGC/IC project and others) to be the smaller bright flare nebula at the same central coordinates. Coincident with these coordinates is the very small open cluster Collinder 404. Other notable emission structures (one above and another to the right of Sh2-86) appear in a lesser known catalog as Du 28 and Du 26 (HII regions of the Northern Milky Way - R. Dubout-Crillon 1976). There are several Dark Nebula from the TGU Catalog (optical - DSS, by star count method) and the Dobashi catalog (IR Band - 2MASS sky survey). These objects and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image.

Edit - A colleague pointed out to me that I had identified the planetary nebula by its central star (Lan 21). The Title and Annotation image have been corrected to the planetary designation (Kronberger 9).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
