Description

NGC 7023, the iris nebula, is a spectacular reflection nebula located within the constellation Cepheus.  The vibrant blue color seen at the core of this target is the result of scattered light emitted from the centrally located open cluster.  Little flecks of red and pink can be found interspersed throughout the core region indicating the presence of an interesting photo luminescent behavior.  The immense amounts of ultraviolet radiation being emitted from the central cluster are causing the excitation and subsequent emission of red photons from hydrocarbons located within the dust.  This process is different from emission nebulae, where radiation is causing the ionization of compounds - emitting characteristic wavelengths that can be used to spectroscopically characterize the species in question.

Shooting this target was a rather drawn out process - we began collecting data the second NGC7023 was above 40 degrees for more than an hour per night.  This was also the first target where we used a higher gain to help minimize read noise.  This came with the advantage of cleaner data - but introduced an artifact in the form of “dark blooming” from highly saturated pixels.  Still working on mitigating this through likely some shorter exposures.  Always more testing to do! Thanks,Michael & Jon Norman
