IC2944, IC2948, and IC2872 are a trio of nebulae located in the southern constellation of Centaurus, and they are truly awe-inspiring objects in the night sky. IC2944, also known as the Lambda Centauri Nebula or the Running Chicken Nebula, is the largest of the three nebulae, spanning an area of around 100 light-years. IC2948, also known as the Running Shoe Nebula, is a smaller but equally stunning nebula located just to the north of IC2944. IC2872, also known as the Four-leaf Clover Nebula, is a fainter and more distant nebula that is located just to the west of IC2948.Together, these three nebulae form a stunning cluster of star-forming regions that are some of the most active in our galaxy. The nebulae are home to countless young stars that are being born from the vast clouds of gas and dust that make up the nebulae. These stars are incredibly hot and bright, and they are responsible for lighting up the gas and dust around them, producing the stunning colors that we see here.

This image required two frames to capture the breath of these nebulae, aligned at the bottom and top edges of the images. This Narrow Band SHO image is enhanced with RGB stars. The size of the image is 12,000 by 12,000 pixels providing significant details as you zoom into the image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
