Description

This Image contains data from 2022 and additional data from 2023

M106 is one of the brightest examples of a Seyfert type II galaxy and is therefore a strong X-ray emitter
with unusual emission lines, which are believed to result from sections of the galaxy falling into the
central supermassive black hole. American astronomer Carl Seyfert first identified this class of object in 1943.
 M106 Lies 25 million light-years away, has a radius of 67,500 light-years and contains > 400 billion stars.

The small galaxy NGC-4248 near M106, is believed to be part of the M106 Group and is 24 million light-years away.
The other galaxies NGC-4217 and NGC-4220 are at 60 and 64 million light-years away.  Note: NGC-4226 is 390 million light-years away!
