Description

From Wikipedia:
NGC253 is a spiral galaxy in the Southern constellation Sculptor.  It is a starburst galaxy, currently undergoing rapid star formation.  It is unusual in that its spiral structure is most evident in it's dust lanes.

NGC253 is between 10.9 and 12.8 million light years distant, depending on measurement method.  It is believed to have a super massive black hole at it's centre, slightly larger than that of the Milky Way at about 5 million times the mass of our Sun.

NGC253 is a member of the Cladwell catalogue, designated Caldwell65.  The Caldwell catalogue was compiled by Sir Patrick Moore as a list of deep sky objects visible to amateur astronomers.  It consists of 109 objects ordered by declination, C109 being the most southerly.  The Caldwell catalogue was first published in 1995 in Sky and Telescope magazine.
