Description

NGC 1316 (60 million light-years) is located within the Fornax Cluster. However, in contrast to Messier 87, which is a similar elliptical galaxy that is located in the center of the Virgo Cluster, NGC 1316 is located at the edge of the Fornax Cluster.

NGC 1316 appears to be interacting with NGC 1317, a small spiral galaxy to the north and they appear separated by over 100,000 light-years. However, that small spiral galaxy does not appear to be sufficiently large enough to cause the distortions seen in the structure of this galaxy.

Complex dust lanes visible within also indicate that NGC 1316 is itself the result of a merger of galaxies in the distant past. One of the visually brightest of the Fornax cluster galaxies it is one of the strongest and largest radio sources with radio emission extending well beyond this telescopic field-of-view, over several degrees on the sky. Laborious processing for this LRGB image. Probably spent 20+ hours developing new workflows and techniques to bring the best of this image details to life. Hope you enjoy it!
