Description

An H-II emission nebula in Cassiopeia, the bubble is formed by the powerful stellar winds from a massive hot central star. It is expanding into a surrounding hydrogen cloud which is glowing in the radiation from the star. The bubble is around 7 light years across and distance estimates range between 7,000 and 8,000 light years.

The central star (the brightest within the bubble, actually slightly off-centre) is SAO 20575 or BD +60º 2522. It is an O-type star estimated to be 45 times as massive as the Sun. Although only about 4 million years old it has already moved from hydrogen to helium fusion and is in the process of expelling its remaining outer layers of hydrogen. It is very likely to become a supernova within 10 to 20 million years.

The RGBH-α image is dominated by the H-α signal from the nebula, with the RGB mainly contributing to the star colours.Exposure times: Red 60min, Green 120min, Blue 140min, H-α 320min.
