Description

NGC 147 and NGC 185 are dwarf elliptical galaxies in the constellation Cassiopoeia.  Both are satellite galaxies of M31 (the Andromeda Galaxy) and are members of the Local Group.  NGC 185 was discovered by William Herschel in 1787, and was one of the galaxies captured by James Keeler in his pioneering work photographing galaxies starting in 1898.

The galaxies are 2.3 and 2.1 million light years away, respectively, similar in distance to M31, but they are much smaller at ~2,500 light years in diameter.
