Description

Since taking up astrophotography last year, I've been particularly excited about my family's annual summer trips to the beach in North Carolina.  The area's Bortle 4 skies treat the unaided eye to a beautiful view of the Milky Way, and the house we rent offers an unobstructed view of the southern sky that I can only dream of from home.

I was determined to make the most of the time I have in NC, so I have been planning out my imaging sessions for months, and I settled on the bright and beautiful Swan Nebula (M17) as my first target.  It was clear the moment I arrived that that first night would be perfect for imaging, so I quickly unpacked and reassembled my gear.  Given the clear, dark skies, I decided to capture only broadband data, and even decided to do without my trusty Optolong L-Pro light pollution filter.  Instead, I purchased an Optolong IR/UV cut filter for the occasion--and it performed admirably.  I spent an enjoyable night contemplating the Milky Way and tracing constellations while my "C6 RASA" collected data beside me.

Although late June nights are short, I managed to collect 5.5 hours of data on the Swan.  Each subframe was clear and bright; the processed stack needed only modest post-processing.  I am thrilled with this image and I hope you enjoy it.
