Description

The Lambda Centauri Nebula is catalogued with various designations, including Collinder 249, Caldwell 100, The Running Chicken Nebula, and comprising objects IC2944 and IC2948 (for a full explanation of name confusion, see O'Meara 2016:459–63). This interesting region of space comprises a large area of rich emission nebulosity in the southern Milky Way and is approximately 6500 light years distant. Lambda Centauri lies close to the border with Carina, and the nebula is just south of the larger and brighter Carina Nebula. The Lambda Centauri Nebula is known for its Bok globules, the dark clumps of hydrogen that are silhouetted against the larger nebula and that are clearly visible in the image. This final version of the Lambda Centauri Nebula is just over twenty hours of data.
