Description

The double Quasar Q0957 + 561 was the first confirmed case of a gravitational lens, an effect predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. It consists of two images of the same quasar originated by the gravitational effect of a cluster of galaxies located about 3.5 billion light years away. This Quasar is much further away: it is estimated to be about 8.7 billion light years away. The quasar light was emitted when the universe was about 1/3 of the current age. The images are separated by 6 "and have an apparent magnitude of 17.

The quasar was discovered in 1979.
