Description

The Monkey Head Nebula (NGC 2174) is a fairly bright emission nebula in Orion. It has an apparent size just a bit larger than the full moon. The nebula is about 6,400 light years distant.

The h-alpha emission is so much brighter than the others that I couldn't do a conventional tone map process to balance out the channels to bring out the OIII and SII. If I had the noise in those channels would have become overwhelming. Instead I selectively lowered the green channel after combining to help bring out the other filters. The H-alpha is so strong that this didn't hurt the final appearance.

Here's how I processed:

Each S H and O:
dynamic crop
deconvolution
MLT noise reduction
generalied hyperbolic stretch
make a copy of each channel for starless processing
invert/SCNR/invert to remove magenta
starnetv2 generating stars image

each S H and O starless
starnet2
histogram transformation to spread out the data (though I had to restrain myself on S and O even though they were relatively strong signals)
tgv denoise

SHO
channel combination
curves (a few iterations to selectively tone down the green channel)
LHE (2 scales)
MLT sharpening
pixel math in SHO_stars
