Description

Messier 78 or M78, also known as NGC 2068, is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. M 78 and the surrounding nebulae belong to the Orion B molecular cloud complex and are about 1,350 light-years from Earth. The red streak of gas in the image is a small part of the much larger Barnard’s Loop.

I don’t have a very good view to the south at my home imaging location, but luckily I live close to some of the darkest skies in Japan. I was blessed with a rare clear night during new moon, not a cloud in sight all night. Perfect. This image also captured in early 2023.
