Description

The area of nebulosity imaged here is commonly called the Elephant's Trunk nebula. The trunk itself is cataloged as IC 1396A. It is a very dense, elongated region of dust and gas globules, approximately 20 light years (LYs) in length. It's appearance resembles an elephants head and trunk, with a bright surrounding halo of gas.  It is located some 2,450 LYs from Earth. The trunk is a region of star formation, with some 250 known young stars, some as young as 100,000 years old.

Located close to the center of the image is the relatively faint emission nebula IC 1396. The star responsible for it's blue glow is the multiple star system HD 206267 . IC 1396 contains a number of globules similar to IC 1396A (Elephants Trunk).

The bright star on the right side of the image is the red supergiant  Mu Cephei. It is known as Herschel's Garnet star. It is one of the largest, as well as one of the reddest stars in our sky. It has a radius of 1,260  -1,650 times that of our sun; if positioned in the center of our solar system, it would extend past the orbit of Saturn.

Directly below Mu Cephei is a small (in my image) pretty OIII emitting planetary nebula cataloged as PK100+04.1.
