Description

NGC 5189 is a gorgeous and unusual planetary nebula and is very  knotty and filamentary in its structure, it  spans around 3 light years and is located 1,800 light-years away in the southern constellation Musca.
When a star like our Sun is dying, it will cast off its outer layers, usually into a simple overall shape but this one is unusual in its intricate structure!
The knotty, filamentary structure of NGC 5189 formed as a dying star shed its outer layers. Interestingly, this planetary nebula has two nested structures tilted with respect to each other.

Imaged in SHO with RGB stars on the Planewave CDK 700 at Observatorio El Sauce, Obstech, Chile.

Image acquisition: Mike Selby

Processing this was tricky, to get the fine structures out and also the delicate color and variations. It shows nicely in narrowband and also in RGB but this version is presented using narrowband for nebula and RGB for stars only.
