Description

M109 is a LINER (low-ionization nuclear emission-line region) galaxy, with a strong spectral line emission from neutral or weakly ionized atoms, and relatively weak emission from strongly ionized atoms. In short, it has an active nucleus, though less active than Seyfert galaxies--both powered by a central black hole. These galaxies can turn on though, generating a bright quasar. That would be cool to see!

M109 is about 50 million light years away and over 100,000 light years across. M109 is part of the Ursa Major Group of Galaxies, and is one of the brightest and largest galaxies in this group. It is really wonderful to see all the galaxies in this field, though many of them are much, much farther away than this local group of galaxies.

The three largest galaxies in this field are satellites of M109, like our own Magellanic Clouds: top left of center, PGC37553; top just right of center, PGC37621; right, just below center, PGC37700. Also, right and slightly above center. PGC 2832098 is likely a satellite galaxy based on a similar red shift. Finally, just to the right, and slightly below PGC 24236214, the red galaxy is SDSS J115722.65+531644.3, which is 3.5 billion light years away, based on its red shift!
