Description

Comet Leonard (12/05/21)
Cdk17 NM (subs by Benard Miller)
RGB: 10 each x 30"
L: 9 x 30"
Total exposure: 9.5'
Processed by Alex Woronow (2021) using PixInsight and Topaz

This is my first comet picture--I had little idea there was so much involved! PixInsight's CometAlignment process lacked any meaningful documentation that I could find, but a few tutorials highlighted the way forward. The mono subs made processing much more complex than it would have been with a CFA sensor but allowed for better color calibration, I believe. The use of StarXTerminator in PI was a boon, along with some custom PixelMath icons that replaced the stars in a reasonable way. I noticed that many of the comet images I have seen have a bright aqua tone throughout. My color calibration yielded red in the tail. Since the head is aqua, the entire comet could have been aqua if that were its actual color. Then it seems most logical that the comet is not a head-to-tail aqua-toned object. (Right?)
