Description

This is NGC 281, the Pacman Nebula located 9,500 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. This is an emission nebula formed around a cluster of high mass blue stars in the center. These stars produce a wind of charged particles that cause the surrounding gases to pushed outward and glow at various wavelengths. This image also shows several "Bok globules", dark dense formations of gas and dust that are being pulled together by gravity. These dense globs will eventually compress enough to kick start nuclear fusion and become new stars.
