Description

This is a combination of a small (5'x5') compressed open cluster and a round, well defined emission nebula. The cluster involves about a dozen star, the brightest beeing magnitude 11.8. Sir William Herschel discovered this object on 28 december 1790  and recorded it as object H49_5 in his 2511 objects  catalogue, where the _5  stands for class 5 (very large nebulae) in his 8 classes classification scheme. Visually, he described it as "6 or 7 small stars, with faint nebulosity between them, of considerable extent, and of an irregular figure". (From Mark Bratton's "The Complete Guide to Herschel Objects", Cambridge University Press, 2011)
