Description

The genesis of this image is tied to a massive case of bad luck. As it happened, in the summer of 2023 I finally managed to take all the family to the long sought after holiday in Greece... by car. After travelling close to 3000 km (from my home in the UK) we made to our destination. Given the site we were staying had a rated dark sky of B4 I also thought about taking some of my portable gear so I was pretty loaded with the usual paraphernalia of tracker, tripod, zillions of adapters, cables and cameras and what-not. All told I must have taken with me at least 20 kg of gear. Only to discover, once we were settled down, that a key element was missing: the damned wedge. So I had to do without tracking. Back to photography at its most basic: a tripod, a camera and a short lens, in this case my trusty Nikon 50mm D/1.8. To play it safe I elected to open it to f/4 to keep the shots well corrected. Taken the gear to the beach to have a clear shot at the southern sky and despite all sort of parasitic lights (including laser beams from a disco 5 km away) I managed to capture enough 2.5s frames to create this mosaic. Obviously pointing was done by line-of-sight pointing so eventually some cropping was needed.

Loosely listed from top to bottom (that is  in decreasing declination order) these are the Messier objects captured in the mosaic:
M11, M26, M16, M17, M24, M23, M25, M21, M20, M22, M8, M28, M54, M69, M70, M6 and M7
