Description

A project I have worked on over the last four nights, some of the images from which I have already posted but this is the combined widefield mosaic from those sessions.

At the bottom of this image is the Gamma Cygni Nebula, also known as the Sadr Region or IC 1318, a diffuse emission nebula that can be seen around Sadr (Gamma Cygni), the star at the center of the Northern Cross, which marks the heart of Cygnus, the Swan. Despite the name, the star and the nebula are unrelated. Even though it looks embedded in the nebulosity, Sadr is approximately 1800 light years distant, while the nebula is much further away, at 4900 light years. At the top of the image is an area of nebulosity around the reflection nebula NGC6914, also in the constellation Cygnus.

The overall image is a mosaic of 4 other images to cover the area, each image comprising 50 light images of 3.5 min duration each at ISO 800, 20 dark frames, 20 flat frames and 20 bias frames, so a total of 440 frames combined. The total integration time is 11hr 40 minutes. All shots unguided.

This is a massive image so best viewed larger than above for impact.
