Description

Messier 100, aka NGC 4321, is a fine grand design spiral displaying lots of detail given its 55 million light-year distance.  In the field are several other NGC objects, and even further members of the Virgo cluster of galaxies.   With an apparent diameter of ~8 arcmins, the galaxy has a true diameter of ~110K light-years.   It's one of the brightest members of the Virgo cluster.    NGC 4328 and NGC 4322 are the two close bright elliptical companions in the field.    NGC 4312 is the elongated spiral further away in the field, and IC 783 is the smaller spiral near the far right center of the field.
