Description

NGC 2997 is a very nice magnitude 10.0 spiral galaxy reminiscent of M 83, but with a disk that is inclined 45 degrees to our line of sight. Its small nucleus and sprawling spiral arms give it a type "Sc" designation. Its spiral arms are peppered with bright red blobs of ionized hydrogen, where the bright blue stars are born that generate most of the galaxy's light. The nucleus shows interesting structure and contains an older population of yellowish stars.
NGC 2997 is about 25 million light-years away, and is speeding away from us at about 1100 kilometers per second. It is the brightest galaxy of the NGC 2997 group of galaxies. NGC 2997 is thought to have a mass of about 100 billion times that of our Sun, but is probably less massive than our own Milky Way Galaxy. NGC 2997 is particularly notable for a nucleus surrounded by a chain of hot giant clouds of ionized hydrogen.
