Description

2021208 - Moon 25%(+) - First light with the C11 EHD, single test shot with the DSLR

What’s in the picture(s) -
Quote: “The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. At about one-quarter the diameter of Earth (comparable to the width of Australia), it is the largest natural satellite in the Solar System relative to the size of its planet, the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System overall, and is larger than any known dwarf planet.”

What was the experience
It’s official now, the beast is alive … Like Frankenstein , I created my monster, re-using the spare parts of my other scopes, and brought the C11 EHD alive for the first time. The C11 was delivered a couple of weeks ago, but it had been cloudy and raining ever since …. apologies, folks, didn’t dare come clean on this one 😊

By chance, a clear patch of sky at dusk this evening, with the crescent moon in full view of my window. With a rain/thunderstorm to follow shortly, the scope is too big/heavy to quickly haul it outside, so it’s sliding open the window door. I’ve mounted the tripod on rollers, getting the scope as close as possible to the window, manually pointing (no polar alignment, no guiding), and pressing the shutter button on the DSLR-camera I attached to the scope … first clicks, first light … filling up the SD-card in the enthousiasm 😂

The picture is not perfect, but to me, it represents a new milestone in my journey … 🤩

How it was done
Scope: C11 EHD (FL 2800mm)
Mount: CGX-L
Camera: Canon EOS R
Filter: Astronomik L1 UV/IR
Photons: Single shot, ISO 800, 1/60
Processing: Siril, Adobe Photoshop (Mac)

What have I learned from this
This C11 EHD is big and heavy, I mean BIG and HEAVY. It will be some getting used to, to move this outside/inside for observation nights 🤨💪
Can’t get the ASIAIR Pro to work on the CGX-L, searched the internet, unfortunately this is currently a dead end 😱 Will need to find out how to operate this mount in a different way 🙄, not even sure if autoguiding works in spite of the ST-4 port
Focusing is a pain, the seeing makes every image very wobbly, and the slightest touch on the focuses makes it jump even harder 😳
Respect to the planetary imagers out there=14px🪐👌👏

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
