Description

Sh2-224/LBN 769 in HOO Palette

Sh2-224, also known as the Auriga's Flaming Skull Nebula or the Rice Hat, is a striking emission nebula situated in the constellation Auriga. This celestial expanse is characterized by intricate structures of ionized gas and dust, illuminated by the energetic radiation of nearby massive stars. At the heart of Sh2-224 lies a region of intense star formation, where the gravitational collapse of a molecular cloud has given rise to a cluster of hot, young stars. These stellar powerhouses emit copious amounts of ultraviolet radiation, ionizing the surrounding hydrogen gas and causing it to fluoresce in brilliant hues of red and pink.

This target was once of the most difficult objects I have ever tried from my suburban skies. Even after collecting 25 hours of OIII, the signal in this frequency was barely above the sky background. Individual subframes showed no hint of anything being present, and only after integrating was the ghostly blueish apparition obtained. After these steps, large boosts to saturation and brightness were needed to bring forth any structures. The Ha channel was also on the faint side but not quite as dim. If attempting this target, little to no moon, darker skies and many hours of imaging would be beneficial. The framing was done at longer focal length and focused more on the LBN 769 roundish region over the larger triangular "hat" area which lies further from center. Imaging performed over numerous moonless periods in November and December 2023.
